Free Pattern - The Cozy Fit Beanie

There’s just something about the look of a hat that’s pulled down over the ears… It’s so.. well.. cozy!

This beanie pattern includes instructions for four different yarn weights - fingering, dk, worsted and bulky so you can choose your favorite yarn weight to work with. Design is the simplest of simple with just a little bit of ease for the softness and drape of a cozy look. If you’re just starting out with knitting, this makes a wonderful first project!

Sizes
S (M, L) to fit head circumference 19-20 (21-22, 23-24) inches / 48.25-51 (53-56, 58.5-61) cm

finished circumference (approx. unstretched around hem): 17.5 (19, 20.75) inches / 44.5 (48.25, 52.75 ) cm 
finished length: 7.75 (8.5, 9.25) inches / 19.5 (21.5, 23.5) cm

fingering: 26sts and 40 rows to 4”/10cm on US size 3 (3.25mm) needles in stockinette stitch
dk: 21sts and 32 rows to 4”/10cm on US size 6 (4mm) needles in stockinette stitch
worsted: 17sts and 26 rows to 4”/10cm on US size 8 (5mm) needles in stockinette stitch
bulky: 11sts and 16 rows to 4”/10cm on US size 13 (9mm) needles in stockinette stitch

Yarn Requirements
fingering: 160 (175, 190) yds / 150 (160, 175) m of fingering weight yarn
dk: 150 (165, 180) yds / 140 (150, 165) m of dk weight yarn
worsted: 135 (145, 160) yds / 125 (135, 145) m of worsted weight yarn
bulky: 90 (95, 100) yds / 85 (90, 95) m of bulky weight yarn

dk: 2 (2, 2) 1.75oz/50g balls Drops Lima (65% wool, 35% Alpaca, 109 yds/100 m) in 9020 “Pearl Grey”
worsted: 2 (2, 3) 1.75oz/50g balls Drops Alaska (100% wool,  76.5 yds/70 m) in 04 “Grey Mix”
bulky: 2 (2, 3) 1.75oz/50g balls Drops Snow (100% wool, 54 yds/50 m) in 04 “Dark Grey”

fingering: 16” circular needle and dpns in US size 3 (3.25mm) (or needle size to obtain gauge)
dk: 16” circular needle and dpns in US size 6 (4mm) (or needle size to obtain gauge)
worsted: 16” circular needle and dpns in US 8 (5mm) (or needle size to obtain gauge)
bulky: 16” circular needle and dpns in US size 13 (9mm) (or needle size to obtain gauge)

Taking care not to twist stitches, pm and join to work in round.

Knit every round until piece measures

fingering: 5.25 (6, 6.5) inches / 13.5 (15.25, 16.5) cm
dk: 5.5 (6, 6.5) inches / 14 (15.25, 16.5) cm
worsted: 5.5 (6, 6.5) inches / 14 (15.25, 16.5) cm
bulky: 5.5 (5.75, 6) inches / 14 (14.5, 15.25) cm

Next rnd:

fingering: {knit 29 (31, 34), pm} 3 times, knit 29 (31, 34)
dk: {knit 23 (25, 27), pm} 3 times, knit 23 (25, 27)
worsted: {knit 19 (20, 22), pm} 3 times, knit 19 (20, 22)
bulky: {knit 12 (13, 14), pm} 3 times, knit 12 (13, 14)

Next rnd (decr rnd):
all weights: {sl m, ss(p)k, k to 2 sts bef m, k2tog} to EOR – 8 sts decreased

fingering: 20 (20, 24)
dk:  20 (20, 20)
worsted: 20 (16, 16)
bulky: 12 (12, 8)

sts remain on needles

Next rnd:

all weights: k2tog to EOR

fingering: 10 (10, 12)
dk: 10 (10, 10)
worsted: 10 (8, 8)
bulky: 6 (6, 4)
sts remain on needles

Finishing

Break yarn leaving a 5 in / 12.5 cm tail from end of work and thread through the remaining sts with tapestry needle. Weave in and trim ends. Lightly block by soaking in lukewarm water with a mild wool wash. Gently drain water and squeeze out excess by rolling in a towel. Lay flat to dry while shaping to dimensions according to size knitted. Enjoy your hat!
